Today Alvin posted an experiment that you can do if you like Science and love being green! It is an awesome experiment and I think you should try it out! Here is what you will need!
- Glass or Beaker filled with Water
- Styrofoam Packing Peanut
- Corn-Starched-Based Packing Peanut
Put the styrofoam packing peanut into the glass of water and look at what happens! Nothing! If you didn't know, styrofoam non-bio-degradable,which means it will never break into landfills! And each year 25 billion styrofoam cups get thrown away!
After that, put the corn-starch packing peanuts in the water and look at what happens! The packing peanut dissolves in the water! This means that the corn-starch packing peanuts is bio-degradable,and that is good for the environment! It is also very fun to do because it becomes very squishy before it dissolves completely! Sounds very fun!
Most companies prefer using the styrofoam packing peanuts because it protects packages better, even if they are bad for the environment. But did you know that throwing away the bio-degradable peanuts is green also? After the first good rain, the packing peanuts will dissolve at the landfill!
Later Alvin's teacher told him to eat the bio-degradable peanut! It will cause no harm,so he ate it! It didn't taste very well, but it was very cool, right?
Did you know you can use this if you like arts and crafts, too? Just get a glass of water, and some of the corn-starch packing peanuts. Simply dip your finger in the water, and touch the packing peanuts to make it sticky (This is what happens before it completely dissolves) Then, attach another peanut on the sticky peanut, and let your imagination go wild! (You can build cars,dogs,monkeys,ect....)
These activities are a lot more fun then throwing them away! For the dissolving in water, you practices reducing, and for the arts and crafts, you reused!
Wow,this is really cool! I will try to make this, are you? Leave your thoughts and comments below, and if you actually get to make a cool packing peanut project, comment with a picture too! :-)
